Ariel wuchs in einem reformierten jüdischen Zuhause auf. Nach dem College suchte er im Zen-Buddhismus nach dem Sinn des Lebens, als er in einer Kirche im Zentrum Tokios wiedergeboren wurde. 1998 machte er Aliyah. Er und seine Frau Vered, eine „Sabra“ in fünfter Generation, haben vier Kinder und leben im Zentrum Jerusalems.
Ariel unterrichtet die Bibel auf Englisch, Hebräisch, Japanisch und Chinesisch.
